Could it be time for a change of scene for Cardiff’s beloved statue of Aneurin Bevan? Known as the architect of the NHS, this historic figure is immortalised at the end of Queen Street. But recently, the statue has been dealing with some unwelcome visitors—seagulls!

The bronze figure, adorned with bird-deterring spikes, has become a hotspot for our feathered friends. Enter councillor Sean Driscoll, who proposes a relocation to outside Cardiff’s main railway station. Driscoll believes this spot, at the gateway to Wales’s capital, could provide a fitting welcome to visitors, reminding them of Bevan’s monumental contributions to healthcare.

Driscoll acknowledges the attachment many have to the statue’s current location but suggests the redeveloped Central Square would do justice to Bevan’s legacy. “If Aneurin Bevan is the first and last thing visitors see, it stands as a testament to what this great man contributed,” he says.

Council leader Chris Weaver weighs in, highlighting the importance of keeping the statue “prominent and visible” in Cardiff city centre. While there’s no current plan to move the statue, the idea sparks a fascinating debate about balancing historical respect and practicalities.
