Venomous Snake Attack Sends Man to Hospital in a Sofa Scare

Imagine relaxing at home only to find a two-foot adder under your sofa! That’s exactly what happened to Daniel Case from Tintagel, Cornwall. As he stood up one June day, he felt a sharp pain in his foot, only to discover an adder hanging from it. With its menacing black and green scales, this wild creature left Daniel with puncture wounds that led to a whirlwind day he won’t soon forget.

Daniel quickly realised the seriousness of the situation, wrapping his foot to slow the venom and calling a friend, a lifeguard and paramedic, for help. With no ambulances available, an off-duty paramedic drove him to meet an on-duty crew. En route to the hospital, his symptoms rapidly worsened, leading to a night spent under medical observation at Derriford Hospital.

Unfortunately, reacting to the antivenom, Daniel experienced a seizure, sparking a night of tests and treatment. Spending hours in A&E, he was relieved to find no fangs left in his foot, although his ordeal was far from over. When he finally returned home, wildlife experts had already swooped in, retrieving the snake from its hideout behind the sofa.

The ordeal didn’t end there. Daniel had to revisit A&E due to lingering heart palpitations and chest pains, although no lasting complications were found. His foot remained swollen and painful, requiring vigilance and care.

And the snake? Safely removed, but Daniel is understandably wary, keeping his home tightly shielded and scanning every corner for unwelcome guests. Talk about an unexpected day at home!
