When Julie Phillips-Spurway felt an itch on her shoulder during a family ski holiday, she never imagined it would lead to a life-changing revelation. Initially brushing it off, a snapshot taken by her daughter revealed some suspicious moles. Trusting her instincts, Julie visited her GP as soon as she returned home to Barry.

Tests confirmed it was melanoma, a serious type of skin cancer. Thankfully, early intervention and surgery seemed to clear everything up, giving Julie a fresh lease on life. But, her journey was far from over. A radio advert about unexpected lumps prompted another self-examination, revealing a tiny bump in her armpit. Despite being initially reassured, Julie’s vigilance led to the discovery of cancer cells in her lymph node.

Electing immediate surgery, Julie faced the challenge head-on, even cancelling a planned trip to Thailand to prioritise her health. Another mole on her ankle was removed, confirming her resolve to stay cautious.
While the treatment initially helped, it brought side effects, leaving Julie reliant on medication. However, she’s now celebrated four consecutive clear scans and resumed embracing life, becoming a proud grandmother and cherishing every moment with her loved ones.
“Cancer is terrifying, but each clear scan feels like a blessing,” Julie reflects. Her journey has sparked a mission to encourage others to trust their instincts. “You know your body better than anyone. If you spot something unusual, get it checked. Early detection could save your life, while delaying might not.”
Julie’s story is a powerful reminder to listen to our bodies and prioritise our health. As she continues to thrive, she’s spreading the invaluable lesson that small changes can mean big things, and vigilance is key.
