Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham’s Proposed VAT Reduction Set to Benefit Electric Vehicle Owners Greatly

Imagine this: If you’ve got a home EV charger, you could now be paying as little as 1.52p per mile, especially if you’re on cost-effective tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go. That’s a full charge for just £8 for a 500-mile range!

🌙 Octopus’ EV-friendly tariff already lets drivers benefit from overnight rates as low as 8p per kWh. With VAT gone, those savings could increase further.

However, there’s more to consider. Critics argue that while home chargers enjoy a tax break, public charging remains at 20% VAT. This could deepen the divide for those without private parking who rely on public stations.

Tanya Sinclair, chief of Electric Vehicles UK, calls out this concern. She points out the unfairness in pricing based purely on charging location. “If this government is serious about a fair EV transition, charging costs should be impartial,” she said.

Are these changes enough to keep you charged up, or do they plug into the wider debate about EV accessibility and fairness?
