In an eye-opening chat on Saracens’ YouTube channel with ex-Scotland player Jim Hamilton, Rhys shared, “I’ve had my mental issues, I’ve had issues with alcohol… It’s taken four or five years to get where I am now. I think I’m just getting a grasp on it now.”

Carre, a former Cardiff prop, admits rugby never felt as enjoyable to him as it did to others. He faced a significant setback when Warren Gatland cut him from the World Cup training squad in 2023 for not meeting fitness goals. Rhys felt let down and battled with the pressure of proving himself beyond the pitch.

“It got to the point where they judged me on my weight, not my game,” he revealed. Despite the challenges, Rhys sees this as a turning point: “I think it’s done me a favour in the long-run.”

As the Rugby World Cup approaches, Carre is focused on his path to recovery, eagerly eyeing the opportunity to shine under the new leadership of Steve Tandy. Rhys’s journey is a testament to resilience, reminding us all that even in tough times, we can find our way back. 🌟
