In a terrifying ordeal, a 15-year-old girl was dragged from a bus stop and subjected to a horrific attack in central Edinburgh. Aaron Strachan, 21, wearing a balaclava and brandishing a knife, attacked the teenager in the early hours of May 25 last year. CCTV captured Strachan following her before he forcefully took her into a building’s basement at York Place, blocking her escape with wooden pallets.

Strachan, who had no prior connection to the victim, was later identified through DNA evidence. He was on a violent spree, having stabbed a man hours before the attack and striking another with a claw hammer days later. After pleading guilty to all charges, he was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh, with Judge O’Grady stating he may never be released due to the risk he poses.

Despite initially escaping from custody, he was swiftly recaptured and now faces an indefinite sentence, with a minimum of five years before parole consideration. His name has been permanently added to the sex offenders register.

Faye Cook, Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, emphasised the severity of Strachan’s actions, calling them calculated and predatory, and reaffirmed the commitment to pursuing justice. This case highlights how sexual violence and weapon-induced intimidation have no place in our community.

Let’s all remain vigilant and support each other, ensuring such violence has no place in society. Stay safe, everyone. 🕊️
