🌿 COMMUNITY IN UPROAR 🌿

A beloved green space in Rogerstone, Newport, could soon become a thing of the past, and residents are not taking it lightly! Plans to convert this cherished area into allotments have struck a nerve, with over 200 locals signing a petition to halt the transformation.

Nestled between Groes Road and Ruskin Avenue, the green space isn’t just grass and trees; it’s a community hub! Families picnic, kids play, and dog walkers have their everyday strolls here. Locals argue that turning this vibrant spot into allotments will limit access and dim the community spirit.

Petition organiser Susan Jarrett voices the concern, stating, “It doesn’t make sense.” The 201 signatories aren’t against allotments entirely, but they believe this spot isn’t the right place. There’s also worry about increased traffic in the area, resulting in a ripple of concerns among residents.
The matter is heating up, with local councillors getting involved. The proposal is part of a broader plan to meet the high demand for allotments in Newport, but the question remains: at what cost to community spaces?
While the council’s committee sympathises with the residents, it hasn’t given a final recommendation. The decision now lies with the cabinet member for climate change, who will review the feedback as part of the ongoing consultation.
What do you think? Should green spaces make way for allotments, or should they be preserved for community use? Let us know your thoughts! 🌱 #SaveOurGreenSpaces #NewportCommunity #Rogerstone
