Devastation hit the small village of Gwaelod-y-Garth after an unexpected quarry explosion led to severe flooding, leaving residents grappling with the aftermath. The blast at the nearby quarry sent a rush of muddy water and debris cascading through the streets, damaging homes and forcing several families to evacuate. In moments, his home was inundated with water, bending doors off hinges and covering everything in mud. “I just grabbed hold of my gate and held on tight,” Steve recounted as the water swept past him.

A total of 15 homes were affected, with 13 needing immediate evacuation. Cardiff Council is actively collaborating with various agencies to ensure the local community receives the support they need during this challenging time.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is now investigating the incident, while South Wales Police has stated they are not pursuing a criminal investigation. Meanwhile, the quarry’s operator is aware of the incident but has yet to comment further.
