Luke Thomas, a former architectural designer, shared his story of battling stage four melanoma, an incurable form of skin cancer. It all started with a routine check-up 11 years ago, after noticing a “peculiar-looking mole” on his back. Initially diagnosed as stage one melanoma, the situation escalated when the cancer metastasised to stage four in 2019. Luke, now 39 years old, faced a challenging journey with painful tumours covering his body but maintained a positive outlook.
Treatment through immunotherapy and targeted therapies provided him with moments of respite, including reaching a status of “no evidence of disease” for a period. However, a setback occurred in late 2023 when Luke experienced seizures, revealing that the cancer had spread to his brain. Despite undergoing brain surgery and radiotherapy, new challenges emerged, with suspicions of leptomeningeal disease affecting his mobility and daily life. The NHS proposed further treatments, but Luke sought to access specific immunotherapy privately, requiring £80,000 to £100,000 for four doses.
In response to the financial burden, a fundraising campaign was launched, accumulating nearly £60,000 to support Luke’s treatment. The community rallied around him, organizing events and initiatives to contribute to his cause. Despite the hardships, Luke expressed gratitude for the support network surrounding him and remained determined to make the most of each day. His positive outlook extended to his decision to form a civil partnership and plans for marriage, focusing on cherishing life’s moments amidst the challenges.
Luke’s dedication to raising awareness about melanoma and sun safety led him on a significant journey, walking Wales’ coastal path to advocate for early detection and prevention. Along the way, he fundraised for Melanoma Focus, emphasising the importance of safe sun practices in preventing skin cancer. Despite the diagnosis, Luke found solace and purpose in completing a renovation project, earning him the title of Wales Home of the Year and creating a space he can cherish.
As Luke navigates his ongoing battle with cancer, he remains hopeful and determined, supported by his partner, family, and friends. The fundraising efforts continue to gather momentum, demonstrating the power of community solidarity in times of adversity. With aspirations for further treatments and a desire to extend his quality of life, Luke’s story serves as an inspiration of resilience and courage in the face of a life-altering diagnosis.
