More than 100,000 drivers have been caught exceeding the 20mph default speed limit in Wales, according to recent reports. Despite the high number of offences recorded, founder of the 20’s Plenty for Us group, Rod King, has commended the efforts of the police and the Go Safe speed reduction partnership for their enforcement work. The enforcement of the 20mph speed limit began in November 2023 in mid and south Wales, and later in March in north Wales.
Rod King, chair of 20’s Plenty for Us, emphasised that the large number of drivers caught breaking the 20mph limit does not necessarily indicate a disregard for the law. He explained that before September 2023, many roads in Wales were 30mph, and the transition to 20mph resulted in an increase in recorded offences. King acknowledged the efforts of the Welsh police and Go Safe in making communities safer and deterring illegal driving.
In a statement to BBC Radio Wales, Rod King highlighted that people in Wales are supporting the 20mph limit by driving more cautiously. He pointed out that since the introduction of the lower speed limit, there have been positive outcomes, including fewer fatalities, reduced injuries, and lower risk according to insurance companies. GoSafe, the organization responsible for monitoring and enforcing speed limits, regularly publishes data on the number of offences recorded, average speeds, and the highest speeds recorded. The highest speed observed in the recent data was 89mph in January 2025 in north Wales.
