Wrexham leaders have offered a vigorous defence of their club’s ambitious trajectory after footballing giants such as Alan Shearer questioned whether the Welsh side can truly compete in the Championship next season.
Having clinched an astonishing third promotion in a row, Phil Parkinson’s Red Dragons secured their place in the Championship by finishing runners-up in League One, trailing only Birmingham City. With Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at the helm, Wrexham’s resurgent rise through the football leagues has become a source of global fascination—not least because of the club’s high-profile owners and the worldwide popularity of the Disney+ documentary “Welcome to Wrexham”.
Nevertheless, some respected voices within the sport have sounded a note of caution. Alan Shearer, legendary Newcastle United and England striker, praised the momentum at both Birmingham and Wrexham, but suggested that the realities of the Championship could check the club’s meteoric progress. “What’s happening at those clubs is fantastic, and I’d love to see them in the Premier League one day,” Shearer remarked. “But Championship is a different beast.
