Renowned musician and fashion designer Kanye West has publicly declared that he is moving away from anti-Semitic rhetoric, amidst widespread backlash following several controversial incidents over the past year. West, whose career has frequently intersected with debate and drama, has been under intense scrutiny after making statements and releasing work many have condemned as anti-Semitic.

In a recent series of posts on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, West made a public appeal for forgiveness and stressed his desire for reconciliation and healing. “I am done with anti-Semitism. I love all people,” he wrote, before adding, “God forgive me for the pain I’ve caused. I forgive those who have caused me pain. Thank you God.” He further urged his followers to “share peace” and “share love,” and to recognise the sacredness of the world, referring to the Earth as “God’s kingdom.”

These remarks mark a notable shift in tone from West, who had, until recently, faced mounting criticism for behaviour and public statements widely considered hateful. His actions had included not only making inflammatory comments but also creating and selling merchandise displaying Nazi symbols. Such actions drew condemnation from communities around the world, including many of his fans and long-term collaborators.

According to West, the catalyst for his change of heart came after a video call with his four children, North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm, whom he shares with ex-wife Kim Kardashian. Reflecting on this, he said, “I simply got a FaceTime from my kids and I wanna save the world again.” The importance of family in his life has often been central to his public narrative, but rarely has it been cited so directly as a reason for personal transformation.

Yet, this is not the first instance in which West has claimed to have reconsidered his stance. Back in February, he posted that after “further reflection” he realised he was “not a Nazi.” This came not long after comedian Adam Sandler, himself from a Jewish family, made a pointed joke during the 50th anniversary special of Saturday Night Live, alluding to musicians whose public personas have been tarnished by antisemitism. West responded to Sandler’s light-hearted jab by expressing gratitude, tweeting “Thank you for the love.”

Nevertheless, questions remain regarding the sincerity and permanence of West’s change in perspective. Earlier this year, he released a controversial song titled ‘Heil Hitler,’ which included lyrics blaming ex-wife Kim Kardashian for his past behaviour, and referencing his restricted access to their children. Lyrics from the track included, “With all my money and fame, I still can’t get my kids back… So I became a Nazi, yeah, I’m the villain.”

In previous statements, West had made contentious claims, at one point stating his earlier anti-Semitic comments were “90 percent Jew proof,” a reference that sparked further criticism and confusion. He elaborated by saying, “I said all these politically incorrect things and nobody was able to stop me, extort me, threaten me to change anything,” adding that he had made considerable financial gains from his various businesses during this period. He also noted, “There’s a lot of Jewish people I know and love and still work with.”

As public reaction continues to unfold, many observers are cautious, weighing whether West’s latest statements signal genuine remorse and a commitment to positive change, or if this is another moment in a long pattern of public reversals. The persistence of such controversies has raised wider debate within the entertainment industry around the responsibilities of high-profile figures, the impact of their words and actions, and the process of accountability and forgiveness.

The coming weeks will likely reveal whether West’s call to “share peace” and “share love” signals a new chapter in his career and personal life, or if further controversy is yet to come. For now, many are watching closely, hoping his words are met with corresponding actions that promote healing and understanding.
