**Tributes Paid to 16-year-old After Tragedy at Barry Island Pleasure Park**

A wave of grief has swept through the community of Fitzalan High School following the untimely death of Taha Soomro, a 16-year-old pupil from Grangetown, Cardiff, who lost his life after an incident at Barry Island Pleasure Park on Friday evening. Taha, described by his school as a “much-loved” member of their community, died following what police have termed a “medical episode”.
In the wake of this heartbreaking event, Fitzalan High School has responded by offering dedicated support to both students and staff, ensuring they have access to specialist services to help process their loss. School leaders have also stated that they are working closely with local authorities and other relevant agencies to facilitate the necessary support for those in need during what they called an “incredibly difficult time”.

The school released a heartfelt statement in which they reflected on Taha’s presence and influence. “Taha was a much-loved member of our school community, and he will be remembered with great affection and respect,” said a school spokesperson. Messages of condolence have continued to pour in for Taha’s family, friends, and teachers, all of whom have been shaken by the event.

The school also appealed for privacy to be respected, both for Taha’s family and for the students and staff as they begin the process of mourning. “We ask that the privacy of the family and our school community is respected as we grieve and begin the process of healing,” the school’s spokesperson added.
South Wales Police were alerted to Barry Island Pleasure Park just before 5pm on Friday, 23 May, after the incident involving Taha. Emergency services responded rapidly, but despite their efforts, Taha could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police investigations are ongoing as officers work to establish the exact circumstances of his death.
As part of their inquiries, South Wales Police confirmed that a 15-year-old boy from Cardiff was arrested on suspicion of assault. The teenager was taken into custody but has since been released on police bail as investigations continue. Officers have urged the public to avoid speculation, particularly on social media, as they continue their work to gather all the facts.
A spokesperson for South Wales Police shared the latest developments. “A 15-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of assault is now on bail pending further enquiries. Taha’s family has been updated and continue to be supported,” the statement read. The force is calling on anyone present at the pleasure park around the time of the incident, who might have witnessed the event or has mobile phone footage, to get in touch and assist with their investigation.
Meanwhile, the management of Barry Island Pleasure Park also expressed their condolences, stating, “Very sad news, all of our team did their best to assist the emergency services but unfortunately the boy suffered a medical emergency and could not be saved. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very sad time.” The park remained open over the weekend, with a sombre mood pervading amongst staff and visitors.
The tragic loss of a young life has not only left a void within his immediate circle but also prompted wider questions about safety and support structures for children and young people. As the community rallies together, the call for sensitivity and respect in both personal interactions and online discussions has been emphasised repeatedly by authorities and community leaders alike.
Anyone with information that could help the police investigation is urged to come forward. Details can be provided via the South Wales Police website, by calling 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
Taha’s memory is already being commemorated by classmates, teachers, and neighbours, who remember him as a positive presence with a bright future ahead. As investigations continue, the community’s focus remains on supporting his loved ones and allowing space for mourning and reflection.
