**Van Erupts in Flames Near Reynoldston Police Station: Quick-Thinking Officers Contain Blaze Until Fire Crews Arrive**

Rescue efforts unfolded swiftly in Reynoldston, Swansea, last Friday when a van caught fire alarmingly close to a building located beside the local police station. The incident, which sparked concern owing to its proximity to both a police facility and nearby residences, was rapidly attended to by two South Wales Police officers who happened to be on site.

The drama began when a van reportedly overheated, soon engulfing itself in thick smoke before flames erupted. Witnesses in the vicinity described the atmosphere as tense, fearing the fire might leap from the vehicle to the adjacent property, prompting immediate action from officers PC Chadwick and PCSO Brown.
Bodycam footage, since released by authorities, portrays the urgent response of PC Chadwick. As smoke billowed from beneath the van and visibility deteriorated, he did not hesitate to grab a fire extinguisher in a bid to curb the flames. Moments later, PCSO Brown joined the effort, each working from different angles and attempting – with palpable determination – to suppress the growing inferno.
Despite the officers’ best attempts to subdue the incident using handheld extinguishers, the situation intensified. The blaze resisted these efforts, reigniting and threatening to escalate. Nevertheless, the officers’ persistence played a crucial role in containing the spread, ensuring that the fire did not reach the nearby structure or escalate into a more widespread catastrophe.
Before long, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service was on hand to take over. According to an official statement, fire crews from Reynoldston received the emergency call at 1:46pm and swiftly mobilised to the scene. Arriving amidst clouds of smoke and roaring flames, firefighters deployed a hose reel jet, breathing apparatus, and a thermal imaging camera to ensure both the complete extinguishment of the fire and the safety of the scene.
PC Chadwick later reflected on the event, crediting the outcome to strong teamwork between the emergency services. “The collaboration and teamwork between the police and the fire service ensured that this incident did not end up creating further damage,” he said, noting that, fortunately, no injuries were reported. He also emphasised that, despite the van’s proximity to residential properties, these buildings were unoccupied at the time, reducing the risk to local residents.
Efforts by the initial responders reportedly exhausted their supply of fire suppressant, but their determination ensured the situation did not deteriorate prior to the arrival of the fire crew. Firefighters remained on site until approximately 2:18pm, by which time the van was fully extinguished and the area declared safe.
The incident serves as a strong reminder of the unpredictable nature of vehicle fires and the importance of quick, coordinated responses by emergency services. Neighbours and bystanders praised the prompt actions of both South Wales Police and the fire service, whose professionalism helped prevent a potentially serious escalation.
At present, authorities have not reported any ongoing danger from the incident, and the cause of the van’s overheating is under investigation. For now, locals have been reassured that the threat has been managed and that both the police and fire service are prepared for such situations, reinforcing community confidence in their local emergency response teams.
Such incidents highlight the crucial role collaborative efforts play in safeguarding communities, particularly in rural areas where resources must be marshalled swiftly and effectively to contain hazards before they escalate beyond control.
