**Wrexham Set Sights on Premier League Youngsters as Phil Parkinson Plots Transfer Shake-Up**

Wrexham AFC are making preparations for a significant summer in the transfer market as they look to strengthen their squad for their upcoming Championship campaign. Manager Phil Parkinson, who has guided the club through a remarkable rise under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has suggested that a new approach could be on the horizon when the summer transfer window opens.

Historically, Parkinson has kept loan deals to a minimum during his four years in charge at the Racecourse Ground, opting instead to build a core squad through permanent transfers. Notably, only one loanee—Arsenal’s Arthur Okonkwo—has featured under his leadership, with Okonkwo initially joining as cover in goal after Ben Foster’s sudden retirement last year. After impressing last season, Okonkwo made the move permanent, exemplifying Parkinson’s preference for stability within his team.
However, moving up to the Championship brings its own set of challenges, and Parkinson has now indicated that he is open to recruiting emerging talent from the Premier League, specifically through the loan market. Speaking to The Athletic, he revealed that Wrexham are actively exploring possible short-term signings, in the hope of sourcing players with the quality to make an immediate impact at this higher level of competition.
“It’s vital for us to engage with Premier League loans managers so we know which players might be up for grabs,” Parkinson explained. He pointed out that the club’s growing reputation means they can now attract a higher calibre of talent than would have been feasible in the past. “Premier League clubs are sometimes reluctant to send their top prospects to League One, but with us now in the Championship, the dynamic has changed.”
With this new strategy in mind, several Premier League youngsters are believed to be on Wrexham’s radar as potential additions to the squad. One such name is Jayden Danns, the highly rated 19-year-old forward from Liverpool. Previously linked with a move to North Wales, Danns was loaned to Sunderland earlier in the season, though a back injury hampered his involvement in their promotion bid. Liverpool may now be willing to offer him another Championship loan, with Wrexham seen as a strong option for his continued development.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Will Lankshear is another player who has been rumoured as a Wrexham target. Although talks last summer failed to materialise into a move, Lankshear has gone on to make a mark in European competition but found first-team opportunities limited, resulting in a temporary stint at West Bromwich Albion in the latter half of the campaign. A further loan could benefit both player and club, particularly if Wrexham come calling again.
Leeds United’s Joe Gelhardt—a player previously pursued by Wrexham—might also be on Parkinson’s wishlist after returning from a productive loan at Hull City, where he netted five goals in 20 league appearances. With Leeds earning promotion to the Premier League, competition for a starting place will intensify, making a loan move for Gelhardt elsewhere increasingly likely.
Additionally, Wrexham are said to be closely monitoring Harrison Armstrong, Everton’s promising 18-year-old midfielder. Armstrong impressed while on loan at Derby County, featuring regularly as the club secured their Championship status. A second loan move away from Goodison Park is on the cards, and Wrexham could provide an ideal stage for Armstrong’s continued progress.
Wrexham’s intended shift in the transfer market is a reflection of the growing ambitions held by the club and its North American owners. With promotion bringing increased attention and resources, Parkinson’s willingness to embrace the loan system may be a decisive factor in helping Wrexham adapt to the demands of Championship football.
As the summer window approaches, supporters will be watching with keen interest to see if these potential moves come to fruition. The addition of Premier League talent on loan could provide the crucial quality and depth needed for Wrexham to cement their place in the second tier of English football.
