A mischievous feline from Bingham, Nottinghamshire, has become something of a local celebrity after his unusual antics exposed him as Britain’s “greediest cat”. Known as Bruno, the four-year-old black cat has shocked his owners and garnered attention online for his insatiable appetite and uncanny ability to pilfer human culinary delights by opening kitchen appliances himself.

Bruno shares his home with five other cats, yet it’s his flair for food theft that sets him apart. Owners Richard Page, 48, and his partner Lori, 43, have been forced to adapt their household routine thanks to their pet’s constant food-related escapades. Alongside the pair, their 13-year-old daughter Harriet has been witness to Bruno’s culinary capers, which reportedly include stealing a bag of Mini Eggs, sampling protein pancakes, and even developing a taste for boiled beetroot.

The most recent and perhaps most impressive display of Bruno’s culinary curiosity unfolded earlier this May. According to Richard, what began as a quiet evening ended in chaos when two freshly-cooked pizzas, left in the microwave to cool, mysteriously vanished overnight.

Speaking about the incident, Richard explained: “We’ve learnt very quickly that none of the cats can be trusted anywhere near food. We now never leave anything edible out, not even for a few minutes, because they always find a way.” He added that one of the kittens once fished a packet of Mini Eggs out of Lori’s handbag using her claws, leaving a trail of chocolate evidence across the house.

On the evening in question, Harriet had placed two pizzas in the microwave and promptly forgot about them. The next morning, Richard discovered an empty plate in the microwave and an abandoned wrapper from a packet of protein pancakes on the floor. With everyone at a loss as to what had happened, it wasn’t until later that the mystery was solved.

While her parents were at work, Harriet managed to capture Bruno’s latest food raid on video. In the footage, Bruno can be seen boldly scaling the kitchen worktop, before expertly manoeuvring open the microwave using both paws. He manages to pull hard enough to swing open the door, but the effort causes him to fall backwards off the counter, evidently startled by his own success.

Upon watching the video, Richard said he realised instantly who had been responsible for the missing pizzas. “As soon as I saw it, the whole situation made sense—Bruno is far too clever for his own good. I no longer had any doubt about what happened to those pizzas or why the protein pancakes were missing.”

Richard added that the consequences of Bruno’s midnight feast soon became apparent. “It caught up with him the next day. He didn’t have his usual appetite—for once.”

The family’s six cats, which include five-year-old Sebastian, three-year-old Star and two-year-old twin sisters, as well as one-year-old Dave, are all reportedly keen on “people food”. Despite offering a range of conventional wet cat foods and treats, Richard has found that the cats, particularly Bruno, seem far more interested in filching whatever the family are having for dinner.

The Pages now take extra care to secure both human food and kitchen appliances at night, in a bid to outwit their unusually enterprising pet. “We have to treat every meal as a potential heist,” Richard joked.

Bruno’s exploits have resonated with fellow animal lovers, many of whom have shared similar stories of resourceful pets with outsized appetites. While the feline’s behaviour is cause for amusement, animal experts do warn of the potential health risks posed by cats eating unsuitable foods, and encourage owners to be vigilant.

As Bruno’s story spreads, he stands as a reminder that when it comes to clever cats, owners should expect the unexpected—and perhaps keep a closer eye on their microwaves.
