**Brynmawr Community Mourns Loss of Young Man After Fatal Quadbike Collision on A465**

The towns of Brynmawr and Crickhowell have been plunged into grief following the tragic death of Ethan Powell, a 20-year-old man killed in a quadbike accident during the early hours of 31 May. Ethan was discovered on the A465, between Rhymney and Dowlais, beside an overturned quadbike. Police pronounced him dead at the scene, launching an investigation that has since turned into a suspected murder enquiry.

The loss of such a young life has sent shockwaves through the local community. Ethan, described by friends and relatives as “a one of a kind boy” and “a loving young man”, is being remembered in heartfelt tributes both in person and online. Communities in Brynmawr and Crickhowell have united in organising a series of balloon releases to allow those who knew and loved Ethan a chance to celebrate his life and say a final farewell.

In the wake of his passing, support for Ethan’s family has come pouring in. A GoFundMe page, set up in his memory, cites Ethan as “a special person who will be greatly missed”, and has already raised over £1,500 to ease the family’s financial burdens during this difficult period.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are now part of an active police investigation. Gwent Police have confirmed that two men from Merthyr have been arrested in connection with the incident. A 40-year-old man faces suspicion of murder, as well as driving whilst unfit through drink and drugs, while a 37-year-old man has been detained on allegations of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender. Both men have since been released on conditional bail as enquiries continue.
Family and friends have taken to social media to express their heartbreak. In a particularly poignant message, his mother Emma spoke of her disbelief, describing Ethan as “such a kind, loving soul” who “absolutely idolised his sister and would do anything for anyone”. She went on to say, “You will always live on in our hearts, our heads and our family… you had so much life ahead of you.”
Others have echoed those sentiments. Online tributes recall Ethan’s infectious laughter and ability to “light up a room”, with one friend, Jake Williams, referring to him as both his “best friend and brother” and lamenting the loss of someone “truly one of a kind”.
As the investigation progresses, Gwent Police have renewed their appeal for information. Officers revealed that a burnt-out white BMW, suspected to be involved in the incident, was located in the Dowlais area. Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Edwards urged anyone who travelled along the A465 between 2am and 5am to review their dashcam footage, as any detail could prove crucial to the investigation.
The force has also reassured the victim’s family, stating they are being supported by specially trained officers during this traumatic period. Detective Chief Inspector Edwards re-emphasised the importance of community cooperation: “We’re keen to speak to anyone who was travelling along the A465, especially motorists with dashcam, as they could have details that might assist our enquiries.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Gwent Police either by calling 101 or using their website, quoting reference number 2500171434. Alternatively, details can be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers.
In the midst of sorrow and unanswered questions, Ethan Powell’s memory is being honoured by the collective spirit of the communities he touched. The outpouring of love and support, evident both in public tributes and the rapid response to the fundraising campaign, speaks volumes for the impact he had during his short life.
