**Community Gathers at Crickhowell Castle to Honour Memory of Young Man Killed in Quadbike Tragedy**

A poignant scene unfolded outside the historic Crickhowell Castle as friends, family, and members of the wider community came together to commemorate the life of Ethan Powell, a 20-year-old from Brynmawr who lost his life in a quadbike accident on the A465. The crash, which took place in the early hours of Saturday 31 May, is currently under police investigation and being treated as a suspected murder.

On Wednesday, 4 June, the castle grounds were transformed into a sea of emotions and colourful tributes, as neighbours, classmates, local shopkeepers, and many of Ethan’s peers assembled for a balloon release in his memory. The event, arranged by close friends Marie Williams and Catrin Swanson, invited those who knew Ethan to share their grief, remembrance, and collective support.
Organisers encouraged attendees to write heartfelt messages on balloons, making the tribute deeply personal and tangible. The mood was sombre as Ethan’s mother, Emma, addressed the gathering, her words echoing the devastation wrought by such a sudden and tragic loss. The crowd listened quietly, some wiping away tears, reflecting the profound impact Ethan had on those around him.
A striking display of balloons in shades of blue and navy, along with bursts of red and gold, decorated the castle grounds. Balloons spelling out ‘Ethan’ and his age, ‘20’, served as a tribute to a life cut short far too soon. As the sky cleared just before midday, hundreds of balloons were released into the air, slowly floating over the nearby Llanbedr mountains. The symbolic release reflected both a letting go and a promise to remember.
As the balloons disappeared from view, the weather took a turn, with rain descending on the mourners. Undeterred, people stayed behind—hugging, consoling each other, and sharing cherished memories. Many took the opportunity to sign a book of remembrance, ensuring Ethan’s legacy would not be forgotten among friends, teachers, and neighbours alike.
The invitation to the event described it as a chance for all who shared their school years with Ethan to say farewell. “It would be fantastic to see as many people from our school year and friends in general as possible to say goodbye to such an amazing person,” read the announcement. For those unable to attend, another memorial gathering has been scheduled for Sunday, 8 June, at Welfare Park in Brynmawr, highlighting the widespread sense of loss within the community.
Police continue to appeal for information regarding the incident, which occurred on the westbound carriageway of the A465 between Rhymney and Dowlais. Ethan was found at the crash site after his quadbike overturned and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have arrested a 40-year-old man from Merthyr on suspicion of murder, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, while another 37-year-old man faces charges of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender. Both individuals have been released on conditional bail as investigations proceed.
Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Edwards, leading the inquiry, stressed the importance of public assistance. “We’re especially keen to speak with anyone who travelled along the A465 between 2am and 5am that morning and may have dashcam footage. Additionally, information about a white BMW, found burnt out in Dowlais, could be vital,” he said.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Gwent Police via their usual channels, quoting reference 2500171434, or to offer information anonymously through Crimestoppers. The investigation continues to be a focal point for police as they attempt to piece together the events leading to Ethan’s death.
As tributes continue to pour in and further memorials are planned, the collective support shown at Crickhowell Castle stands as a testament to Ethan Powell’s enduring impact on all who knew him.
