A man is currently in a critical condition after being discovered with severe injuries on the carriageway of the A55, near Colwyn Bay on Tuesday night. Emergency services were called to the major arterial route at around 8pm, prompting an immediate closure of the road in both directions, causing disruption for motorists in the area.

The incident unfolded near junction 20 of the A55, a key stretch of road that runs along the North Wales coast and is frequently used by both local residents and long-distance travellers. Once the injured man was located, paramedics swiftly attended the scene and provided essential first aid before transporting him to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Bodelwyddan.
Due to the extent of his injuries, which authorities have described as life-threatening, the casualty was subsequently transferred by air ambulance to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. This hospital is home to a major trauma centre and is often the chosen destination for the most serious cases in the North Wales region.

In the aftermath of the incident, North Wales Police have launched an urgent appeal for information, asking any witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage who were driving in the area at the time to get in touch. Police believe that any small detail could help them establish the full circumstances of how the man came to be injured on the carriageway.
A spokesperson for North Wales Police confirmed, “We were called at 8:00pm on the evening of Tuesday, June 10th, following reports of a male found with severe injuries on the live carriageway of the A55 at Colwyn Bay. Emergency responders acted quickly and shut down the road to ensure the safety of both the casualty and other road users.”
The police spokesperson added, “The man was initially taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and later transferred to Stoke’s specialist trauma unit. He is currently being treated for significant, life-threatening injuries. The road was reopened just before 9pm, but we are keen to collect as much information as possible regarding this incident.”
The temporary closure of such a vital roadway created delays and inconvenience for many drivers, with traffic being diverted while emergency crews carried out their work. The prompt reopening of the road minimised ongoing disruption, though questions remain about how the incident unfolded.
While details about the identity and background of the individual have not yet been released, police have assured the public that a full investigation is underway. They have encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward by contacting North Wales Police via their website or by calling 101 and quoting incident reference number 25000477200.
Incidents of this nature remain rare on the A55, a route better known for its picturesque coastal views and importance to the region’s economy. However, the case has sparked concern and calls for continued vigilance on Welsh roads, particularly during peak travel times.
As the injured man remains in hospital, local communities and authorities are urging motorists to be mindful of their surroundings and to report anything unusual they may witness on major highways. Further updates are expected once police establish more details about the cause and circumstances leading up to this serious event.
