Tyson Fury, the charismatic former heavyweight boxing champion known as ‘The Gypsy King’, has surprised many by declaring he will not be leaving his considerable fortune to his seven children. Despite a net worth reported to reach up to £180 million, Fury insists his offspring must carve out their own paths in life, rather than coasting on their father’s successes.
Fury, who recently confirmed he is staying retired from professional boxing, is turning his attention to new ventures. This weekend, he takes on a coaching role for the England squad at the star-studded Soccer Aid 2025 event at Old Trafford. Teaming up with Wayne Rooney, Harry Redknapp, David James and actress Vicky McClure, Fury leads a side packed with well-known figures ranging from singer Tom Grennan to Olympic legend Sir Mo Farah.
Addressing his new football role, Fury expressed his excitement, noting his lifelong allegiance to Manchester United makes coaching at Old Trafford a particular honour. “The prospect of leading my England team to victory this June fills me with just as much excitement as any heavyweight fight,” said Fury when his participation was announced. For him, the transition from boxing ring to football pitch is an opportunity to channel his passion for competition into a new arena.
Fury’s retirement at the beginning of this year followed back-to-back defeats against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk. Speaking candidly, Fury said he feels content with his record, the experiences he has gained, and his status. He remarked, “I’m happy, I’m contented. I’ve won belts, travelled the world, and accomplished what I set out to do. There’s nothing left to prove, and no reason to return.”
This sense of fulfilment has also shaped how Fury views his legacy off the field. Despite ranking as the 42nd highest-paid athlete in the world by Forbes in 2024—earning an estimated $50 million (£39.5m) that year alone—Fury has adopted a refreshingly unconventional attitude towards family inheritance. “I want my kids to get their own money, do their own things and be their own people,” explained Fury in a recent interview. “I don’t believe in just handing them all the cash; it makes them weak, spoiled and unappreciative. At the end of the day, I want them to look in the mirror and feel they achieved something because they worked for it, not because it was gifted to them.”
Rather than lavishing his children with grand gestures, Fury stressed the importance of self-reliance. He gave the example of buying a flashy car, arguing that if his son earned a modest vehicle through his own efforts, it would carry far greater value: “If he works hard and gets himself a 2004 Corsa, he’ll be out polishing it every day, and I’ll be proud because he earned it,” Fury said.
While he is not opposed to helping with business ventures or investments, the former champion added he has no intention of making “everyone’s life easy.” For Fury, the lessons that come from striving and sacrifice are what lead to a sense of achievement and purpose in life.
Beyond his boxing winnings, Fury has built further wealth through endorsements with major brands such as WOW Hydrate and Lucozade Sport, co-authoring bestselling books, investing in sports bars, and even starring in a hit Netflix series chronicling his family life.
