Bristol was treated to a spectacle this week as a traditional steam train made a grand entrance to the city, carrying a valuable and whimsical cargo: a dozen sculptures depicting Wallace, Gromit, Feathers McGraw and the inventive robot Norbot. This event marks the beginning of Gromit Unleashed 3, a highly anticipated public arts trail that is set to enchant both residents and visitors to the city throughout the summer months.

In a remarkable nod to Bristol’s heritage and creative flair, the steam-hauled harbour railway train was helmed by Nick Park, the acclaimed creator of Wallace & Gromit. In a scene that delighted onlookers, particularly local school children, the train arrived in the heart of the city, delivering not only the beloved characters but also a palpable sense of excitement for the weeks ahead.

The initiative behind this summer’s art trail is a collaboration between The Grand Appeal—Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity—and the renowned Aardman Animations, the studio behind Wallace & Gromit. Their partnership continues to harness the power of art and community, transforming city spaces while fundraising for crucial paediatric healthcare.

Upon arrival, each sculpture was given a unique introduction to Bristol’s landscape. In a particularly striking moment, one statue was hoisted onto the historic harbour cranes, reinforcing the city’s rich maritime and industrial legacy. Meanwhile, another was sent on board the iconic Pyronaut fire-boat, setting the tone for a summer where art and local history will go hand-in-hand.

Over the course of the coming days, all 53 sculptures will be distributed to various locations dotted across Bristol and, in some cases, further afield. These installations will form a vibrant trail for the public to explore from 30 June to 31 August, culminating in what organisers promise will be an unforgettable citywide celebration of creativity, storytelling, and community spirit.

It’s not just local artists who have contributed their talents to this year’s trail. Among the distinguished contributors are global icons such as Sir Paul McCartney and acclaimed creators from Pixar, Lucasfilm, director Richard Curtis, Jorge R Gutierrez, and fellow Aardman co-founder Peter Lord. Their designs will join Nick Park’s own contributions, making the 2025 edition of Gromit Unleashed the most star-studded yet.

Reflecting on the moment, Nick Park expressed his admiration for the collective creativity on display, noting: “It’s wonderful to witness such imagination from artists worldwide, all united for a fantastic cause. I’m looking forward to a summer of Gromiteering all over the city and beyond.”

Following the close of the trail, the sculptures will take centre stage at The Greatest Dog Show on Earth, an exhibition that offers enthusiasts a final opportunity to view the works up close. They will then be auctioned, with proceeds going to support The Grand Appeal’s continued work at Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Nicola Masters, director of The Grand Appeal, echoed the sense of celebration, saying: “Today truly is a ‘cracking’ day to unveil our 2025 sculptures. Each piece is inspired by stories and folklore, promising a trail filled not just with creativity but also with a sense of magic and cinematic glamour. We hope the entire community joins us for this spectacular summer adventure.”

Gromit Unleashed 3 becomes the latest in a successful line of sculpture trails organised by The Grand Appeal and Aardman, building on the legacy of earlier events such as Gromit Unleashed, Shaun in the City, and Gromit Unleashed 2. These projects have so far raised millions for charity while boosting Bristol’s profile as a city where imagination and generosity thrive side by side.

As anticipation builds, organisers invite locals and tourists alike to discover each lovingly crafted sculpture, support vital children’s healthcare, and be part of a uniquely Bristolian celebration of art and community.
