A recent national survey has revealed what many holidaymakers already suspect: Britain’s coastline boasts some of the most breathtaking vistas in the world, right on our doorstep. Brits’ appreciation for their own shores has, according to the data, translated directly into travel habits. Eight out of ten people stated that having accommodation with a sea view is significant when booking holidays; more than a third say it is essential. The average distance travellers are willing to cover for a UK coastal getaway stands at 159 miles, demonstrating a widespread readiness to journey for a glimpse of the sea.

Watching the sun rise or set over the water can be a magical experience—something that is as possible on the Cornish coast as it is on continental shores. Time and again, our guests are awestruck by the beauty of the UK coastline.”
The desire to stay by the sea is fuelled not just by aesthetics but by personal wellbeing. Respondents cited relaxation, escapism, and the health benefits of being close to the ocean as their leading motivations for paying extra for a room with a sea view. The sea air and soothing sound of waves remain compelling draws, especially for those hoping to unwind from daily pressures.
The research also points to a shift in holiday priorities. British travellers value the flexibility of local breaks, preferring to avoid the complexities of international travel such as airports, flight delays, and currency exchange. The ability to plan spontaneous trips and take beloved pets along remains a key advantage of UK holidays.
