Celebrated British actors Hugh Laurie and Matthew Macfadyen are set to lend their talents to an ambitious new Harry Potter audiobook series, joining a vast ensemble of over 200 performers breathing new life into JK Rowling’s magical world. This major project, titled “Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions,” seeks to offer listeners an immersive auditory journey through the wizarding saga, featuring a unique full-cast format, original music, and authentic soundscapes.

In this forthcoming adaptation, Laurie, known globally for his roles in “House” and “Blackadder,” will assume the voice of the beloved Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. Macfadyen, fresh from his acclaimed performance in HBO’s “Succession,” will portray the dark Lord Voldemort. This ambitious series aims to enchant a new generation while providing long-time fans with a novel way to experience the much-loved books.

Laurie expressed his excitement and humility at the role, stating, “I’m honoured to have been entrusted with Dumbledore’s character, following in the footsteps of so many distinguished actors – from Richard Harris and Michael Gambon to Jude Law, and not forgetting the iconic audio narration by Jim Dale and Sir Stephen Fry.” Laurie’s comments reflect not only the pedigree of performers who have taken on the role before him but also the anticipation building around this new project.
Produced by Audible in partnership with Pottermore Publishing, the audio series stands apart from previous renditions, which famously featured single-voice narrations by either Stephen Fry or Jim Dale. Instead, the new production offers a dynamic experience, with multiple voice actors and an emphasis on atmosphere and depth.
The ensemble cast boasts an impressive roster of talent. Joining Laurie and Macfadyen are Emmy-winner Riz Ahmed as Professor Snape, Scottish actress Michelle Gomez voicing Professor McGonagall, and Cush Jumbo taking up the role of narrator. Newcomers Frankie Treadaway, Max Lester, and Arabella Stanton have been cast as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger respectively for the first three instalments. Later books will see Jaxon Knopf, Rhys Mulligan, and Nina Barker-Francis take up the mantle of the trio. Further casting announcements are expected in the coming months.
Rachel Ghiazza, Audible’s Chief Content Officer, remarked on the vision behind the project: “Magic is coming alive as these brilliant actors lift iconic characters off the page and into our ears. We believe this series will inspire both lifelong readers and those new to the world to rediscover the wonders of Harry Potter through sound.”
The release schedule has been mapped out, with the series launching on 4 November with “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” Subsequent titles, including “The Chamber of Secrets” and “The Prisoner of Azkaban,” will follow monthly, extending into spring 2026. This approach allows fans to steadily revisit each chapter of Harry and his friends’ journey, echoing the original anticipation that surrounded the book releases.
This audiobook adaptation arrives at a time of renewed interest in the world of Harry Potter, alongside the development of HBO’s forthcoming television version. With a reputable cast and production standards set by Audible and Pottermore, expectations are high for an absorbing sonic voyage through the wizarding world.
As fans eagerly await the first instalment’s release, this landmark full-cast project promises to enchant audiences and honour the legacy of Rowling’s enduring series, ushering in a new era of storytelling for the digital age.
