Tragic Accident Claims Young Mechanic’s Life 💔

In a heartbreaking incident, 27-year-old Daniel Burton, a passionate mechanic and devoted father of two, was tragically killed while working on his own car. Despite heroic efforts by neighbours and emergency services to save him, Daniel couldn’t be rescued after the axle stand he used gave way, trapping him beneath the vehicle.

A Cardiff City fan with a zest for life and a love for football, Daniel was described as ‘happy go lucky’ with a cheeky charm. Known for preferring hands-on work to desk jobs, he was on the verge of achieving his dream of becoming an MoT tester at K&J Motors in Pencoed.

On that fateful day in January, after a family outing to Penlan Leisure Centre, Daniel was eager to fix his Audi A3. Despite the late hour, he set to work on a sloped street in Skewen. Passers-by noticed him working under the car, which was raised on one side with the rear wheels removed. Tragically, one observer felt the setup seemed unsafe but hesitated to intervene.
Around 6:30 pm, a woman searching for her stolen car stumbled upon the tragic scene. She quickly raised the alarm when Daniel didn’t respond to her questions. Neighbours rushed to help, using a jack to attempt lifting the car, but it was too late.
Coroner Colin Phillips ruled the death as accidental, citing traumatic asphyxiation as the cause. He conveyed heartfelt condolences to Daniel’s family, acknowledging how deeply loved and missed he was.
This tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of safety when working on vehicles, especially under challenging conditions. Let’s honour Daniel’s memory by ensuring our workspaces are secure for us and our loved ones. 💔🚗
