A heartbreaking tragedy has struck Cardiff as police launch a murder investigation following the death of 32-year-old Nirodha Niwunhella in the Riverside area. She was found seriously injured on South Morgan Place but sadly couldn’t be saved despite paramedics’ best efforts. Her family remembers her as a “cherished daughter” and a “dear friend to many,” touching lives with her kindness and warmth.


In a late-night update, police have charged 37-year-old Thisara Weragalage from Pentwyn with her murder. He’s been remanded in custody, set to appear at Cardiff Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Davies extends heartfelt condolences to all of Nirodha’s loved ones, emphasising the extensive support in place for them. He urges anyone with information to come forward, particularly those with CCTV or dashcam footage from the Riverside area, between 7.30am and 8.30am on Thursday, August 21. Detectives are especially interested in a grey Ford Fiesta seen around the area.
In a moving tribute, Nirodha’s family expressed their deep love and gratitude, remembering her as an inspiring presence whose memory will continue to thrive. Rest in peace, angel.
