We’re facing a major challenge here in Wales as the number of new homes being built has hit a record low. Between April 2024 and March 2025, construction started on just 3,798 homes—that’s a whopping 26% drop compared to the previous year. To put this into perspective, nearly 7,000 homes were being built annually around 2015-16.

This shortfall plays a big part in our housing crisis, making it tougher for folks to find affordable homes and contributing to the rise in homelessness. 🌧️

🔹 **Key Stats:**
– From 2024-25, only 3,798 new homes were initiated.
– During the same period, 4,631 homes were completed—a slight 3% decline from previous numbers.
– The majority of these completed homes (73%) were constructed by private developers.

Across Wales, the new house builds are sparse, with Cardiff starting 412 properties, while places like Denbighshire only saw 43 new homes. In Newport, however, the rate was relatively better, with 356 new builds commencing.

The Welsh Government acknowledges data limitations but assures that delivering more homes is a top priority. Plans include extending the Help to Buy Wales scheme and investing over ÂŁ2bn in social housing this Senedd term, with ÂŁ411m budgeted for the upcoming year.

The housing landscape is changing, and every bit of support counts. Let’s hope these efforts ease the housing strain and help more Welsh residents find a place to call home. 🏡
