In light of this, local leaders are pushing for massive investment into the existing Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen. Having served the community for almost 75 years, Glangwili is showing its age and sorely needs updates, especially in its general wards.

There has been talk of downgrading current hospitals like Glangwili and Withybush, stripping them of their A&E departments, and consolidating these essential services at the new hospital, supposedly to be located in the St Clears or Whitland area. But with the new hospital plans stalling, many are advocating for enhancements at Glangwili instead.

Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths says that with the new hospital nowhere in sight and clinical demand growing, it’s “urgent” to invest in Glangwili now. Meanwhile, Cllr Alun Lenny shares vivid childhood memories of the hospital and emphasises the pressing need for renovating the ageing facility.

Local consultation is key, and the clinical services plan is still open for public input. Officials urge residents to share their thoughts before decisions are made later this year.
