So, what made this celestial light show possible? A recent burst of solar activity sent a surge of charged particles toward Earth. As they mingled with gases like oxygen and nitrogen in our atmosphere, they gifted us with this colourful spectacle. Usually spotted in northern parts of the UK, this aurora appearance further south was due to a stronger solar storm, classified as a “moderate geomagnetic storm” by the US Space Weather Prediction Center.
And it might get even better! Forecasters anticipate the possibility of even stronger solar storms, potentially reaching severe levels over the coming days, enhancing chances to witness this celestial dance right across the UK.
