🇮🇪 Exciting times ahead! Ireland will hold its presidential election on Friday, October 24th. With the current president Michael D Higgins’ term ending on November 11th, the race is on to find his successor.
The Housing Minister, James Browne, will bring the official date confirmation to Cabinet. To be eligible, candidates need the backing of 20 Oireachtas members or four local authorities and must be an Irish citizen over 35.
So far, we know left-wing independent Catherine Connolly and former Fine Gael minister Heather Humphreys are set for the ballot. Humphreys, thrilled with her Fine Gael nomination, promises a campaign centred on honesty, compassion, and service. She’s keen to engage with citizens and lay out her vision.
Sinn Fein has yet to decide if they’ll support Connolly or introduce their own candidate. Meanwhile, Fianna Fail is weighing options, with Jim Gavin and MEP Billy Kelleher in the mix.
