Tragedy struck in Co. Mayo as retired nurse and devoted beekeeper Kathleen Devine sadly passed away after a bee sting incident while collecting honey. Kathleen and her husband, Des, were helping friends with honey extraction near Ballycastle when she suffered a severe allergic reaction to just a couple of stings. Despite immediate medical aid and being airlifted to Sligo University Hospital, Kathleen couldn’t be saved.

Local sources mention the bees were particularly protective of their honey during this season. A fellow helper at the scene also needed hospital treatment for minor injuries sustained while assisting Kathleen. Katherine, remembered as a “lovely, kind, dear lady,” had only recently retired after many years of service in nursing.

Gardai confirmed their assistance in the tragic event, which is subject to further investigation following a post-mortem examination. Our thoughts are with Kathleen’s family and friends during this difficult time. 🐝💔
