Thinking of starting your own business? You’re not alone! A recent study shows a third of Brits are keen to escape the nine-to-five grind and follow their passions. If you’re ready to make the leap, business expert Dr Alison Edgar MBE has some top advice on getting started.

She suggests diving into booming sectors like AI, technology, and beauty—areas brimming with opportunity due to high demand, innovation, and accessible entry. Yet, there’s more brewing excitement in cafes, bakeries, and wine bars as people crave unique and local experiences. Hospitality might just be your sweet spot!

Starting your own business is no small feat—there are risks, but also incredible potential. Dr Edgar encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to connect with their customers and infuse their ventures with passion and personality.

Gen Z is leading the entrepreneurial charge—70% dream of running their own business, drawn by greater earnings and control over their careers. Yet, the study highlights worries too: unpredictable income and cash flow issues top the list of concerns for 30% and 21% of respondents, respectively.
Dr Edgar advises budding business owners to keep an eagle eye on expenses and suggests using a smart meter to easily track energy usage and save costs. Victoria Bacon from Smart Energy GB echoes this advice, noting that smart meters can offer insights into potential savings.
Nearly 68% of aspiring entrepreneurs seek guidance, be it from business-savvy friends, support organisations, or family. While many face funding hurdles, Dr Edgar’s advice is clear: “Start small, test the market, and don’t wait for the perfect moment. Take action—make your dream a reality!”
