The newly appointed UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has made a bold statement just days into her role. She’s considering cutting visa agreements with countries that don’t cooperate with the UK’s efforts to return migrants who have no right to stay in the country. Mahmood is committed to doing “whatever it takes” to tackle the issue of small boat crossings and secure the nation’s borders. 🇬🇧
During a meeting with Britain’s key allies from the “Five Eyes” network – the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada – Mahmood discussed plans for a united approach to tackle irregular migration. She mentioned that the UK might go as far as cancelling future visas if countries refuse to take back their citizens who have no right to remain in the UK.
She stated clearly, “We do expect countries to play by the rules, and if one of your citizens has no right to be in our country, you do need to take them back.” This initiative aligns with the broader commitment of the Labour Government to enhance border security.
There’s also a plan in the works to deport 600,000 people over five years, involving a mix of financial incentives and potentially, visa restrictions—a pledge put forward by Reform UK. Mahmood insists this approach has been a Labour policy that’s been under consideration for a while.
Her message is clear: “As Home Secretary, I have one priority. I have to secure our borders and I will do whatever it takes to get the job done.”
