Shockingly, over a quarter of children in the UK are growing up in households facing hunger, as highlighted by recent findings from a leading food bank network. The charity’s investigation reveals that a staggering 27% of children live in food-insecure homes, where families struggle to afford sufficient, nutritious food.

Even more concerning, about 31% of children under five are particularly at risk. This data, from mid-2024, shows no improvement despite the change in government. Rising living costs have only added to the pressure on families.

The issue isn’t limited to those out of work. The report found that 30% of individuals referred to food banks belong to households with at least one working adult, up from 24% just two years earlier. Clearly, having a job is no longer a guarantee of food security.

In this desperate time, the charity is urging the removal of the two-child benefit cap. If implemented, this change could lift approximately 670,000 people—470,000 of whom are children—out of severe hardship by 2026/27.

The breadth of food insecurity has alarmingly surged, from affecting 11.6 million people in 2022 to 14.1 million in 2024. Among them are 3.8 million children. Actor Brian Cox, who knows firsthand the impact of poverty, calls the report “shocking,” expressing concern that young families are at the highest risk of hunger today.

The hardest-hit regions remain the North West and North East of England, but food insecurity is a nationwide issue. The charity’s director highlights that this crisis stems from outdated systems, urging immediate reforms to prevent hunger from becoming a norm.

The government acknowledges the seriousness of the situation and promises an ambitious strategy on child poverty later this year. They’ve committed to enhancing support for the poorest children, especially during holidays.

This is a wake-up call. No one in the UK should experience hunger. It’s time to challenge and change the systems causing this crisis. 🍽️💔 #HungerCrisis #UKPoverty #TimeForChange
