A breathtaking mural honouring Cardiff City icon Sol Bamba has been unveiled in Grangetown, capturing the essence of a man remembered for much more than his football skills. The mural, painted by local artist Ibby Abdi, is a tribute not just to Sol’s talent on the pitch but to his enduring legacy of resilience and unity.
Sol Bamba, known for his commanding presence and radiant smile, sadly passed away last year at 39 after his battle with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. His vibrant personality and charisma left a significant impact on fans and players alike. The mural, located on a three-storey building, preserves this memory and serves as a beacon of inspiration for the community. The artwork brilliantly captures Sol’s iconic celebration from Cardiff’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Southampton, a heartfelt gesture he once dedicated to the late Emiliano Sala.
Ibby, who also shared a personal connection with Sol, expressed how deeply this project resonated with him. Meeting Sol during Friday prayers in Butetown, Ibby recalled how Bamba’s encouragement and life lessons motivated him during their first encounter. “Sol pushed me always to strive and believe in my dreams. He embodied kindness,” Ibby reminisced, adding that Sol’s impact went beyond the football field, touching hearts and inspiring many in Cardiff.
The unveiling event was graced by Sol’s wife, Chloe, and members of Cardiff City FC, including club director Steve Borley, who lauded Sol as a remarkable leader and friend. Sol’s journey saw him impressively making 112 appearances for the Bluebirds, scoring 10 goals and later taking on coaching roles before his passing. “Sol’s connection with Grangetown, where the club’s roots lie, makes this mural even more special,” Borley said.
Situated on Penarth Road, just a stone’s throw away from Cardiff City Stadium, this mural is a standing tribute to the legacy of a man who truly inspired and united all who knew him.
