On Tuesday evening, dramatic scenes unfolded at Porthcawl’s popular beach. Just as the Porthcawl RNLI crew were prepping for some classroom training, a surfer in distress was spotted near Hutchwns Point. A quick-thinking member of the public called 999 after spotting the surfer waving for help, and soon enough, the RNLI’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Rose of the Shires, was launched into action. 🚤💨

Despite battling gale force winds and choppy seas, the lifeboat crew reached the stranded surfer in minutes. According to Helm Gareth Collins, who led the rescue, the surfer kept his cool by staying with his board and waving for help instead of heading towards the dangerous rocks. “Once alongside him, it was a quick pull to safety,” said Collins. The good news: he was unharmed and in high spirits! 😃🤙

Port Talbot Coastguard, alongside the National Coastwatch Institution and Porthcawl Coastguard, confirmed their roles in the operation. The surfer, carried towards Locks Common by the tide, was swiftly brought ashore and greeted by Coastguard Rescue Officers.

No medical intervention needed, but a crucial reminder was issued: for those venturing into the waters of Rest Bay, stick to the side of the lifeguard station by the golf club. And if you find yourself drifting, exit before it’s too late, especially when lifeguards aren’t around.
