Why the special treat? Wetherspoon’s founder, Tim Martin, isn’t just in it for the fun; he’s spotlighting the taxing reality pubs face. Unlike supermarkets, pubs pay a hefty 20% VAT on food and drink sales while groceries enjoy a VAT-free pass on items consumed at home. Martin argues this creates an unfair playing field, letting supermarkets slash beer prices in ways pubs simply can’t afford.
He believes that a VAT cut to 12.5% would be a lifesaver for pubs and restaurants, giving them the boost needed to thrive, invest, and bring new jobs to our communities. He’s calling on the government to level the playing field and create tax equality for the hospitality industry.
