Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is standing firm in the face of a legal challenge that temporarily blocked the deportation of an Eritrean man. Scheduled for a 9am flight to France as part of the UK-France migrant returns deal, his case took a twist when the High Court granted him a “short period of interim relief.”

Mahmood isn’t holding back, declaring, “Last-minute attempts to frustrate a removal are intolerable, and I will fight them at every step.” Determined to secure the borders and prioritise public interests, the Home Office plans to appeal the decision.

While the Technology Secretary, Liz Kendall, expressed disappointment over the ruling, she assured that it won’t derail the broader agreement with France.

The man, whose identity remains confidential for legal reasons, claims he has a gunshot wound and risks “destitution” if sent to France. His legal team argues there’s a trafficking claim at stake. However, Mr Justice Sheldon noted that no “real risk” of destitution seems imminent based on Tuesday’s court arguments, and further court discussions are anticipated.
