🌊 Let’s Talk Beach Safety & Marine Life! 🦭

Big news from Neath Port Talbot Council folks! They’ve thrown their support behind a voluntary ban on selling and using plastic flying ring toys at the beaches they oversee. While there won’t be any fines or penalties just yet, the council is hoping locals will back this initiative to keep our marine life safe, especially those adorable seals who might stick their heads in these rings and end up in a bit of trouble.

At a recent council meeting, Cllr Robert Wood got everyone on board with this proposal. He highlighted the critical conservation role that South Wales plays, given that 38% of the world’s North Atlantic Grey seals call the UK home. These rings pose a huge risk, sometimes causing serious injuries or even worse if seals get tangled in them. Rehabilitation for just one animal can cost up to £15,000!
Cllr Cen Phillips echoed the sentiment, emphasising the role we all need to play in protecting our local habitats and spreading awareness about the issue. The council’s move aligns with actions already taken by Swansea and Vale of Glamorgan, and it seems the public is on board too, with over 43,000 people signing a national petition for a UK-wide ban.
Let’s support this cause and help eliminate these dangerous toys from our shores! Together, we can ensure a safer environment for our precious wildlife. 🌍🤝
