Gareth Bale is not only a football legend but apparently quite the golfer too! While Bale is known for his dazzling footwork on the pitch, he’s been hitting new heights on the golf course— and he’s got a friendly competitor in none other than tennis superstar Sir Andy Murray. The two sports icons, although champions in their respective fields, share a deep passion for golf.

Bale jokingly revealed that if it comes down to handicap scores, he edges out Murray with a handicap of just 0.1, compared to Murray’s impressive 1.9. Despite retiring from tennis, Murray has thrown himself into the sport, aiming for the 2027 Open Championship!

The pair has often teamed up for Pro-Am tournaments, bringing some fun rivalry to the greens. Murray even nailed an eagle recently thanks to Bale’s powerful drive! Bale describes Murray as a good player and a delight to play with, calling him a “nice, humble guy” with a great sense of humour.

Although Bale brushes off the idea of going pro, he relishes the opportunity to rub shoulders with top golfers like Rory McIlroy at these events. He admits he’s enjoying his retirement and the chance to play golf without judgment, and it seems like there are plenty more exciting tee-offs to come!
So, with the cold weather rolling in, Bale jokes his golf game might take a hit, but he’s loving the game and the freedom that comes with retirement. The former footballer shared these insights at the Gareth Bale Festival of Sport at Newport’s Celtic Manor, an event promoting sports engagement in partnership with StreetGames and others. ⛳️🏌️♂️
