A young Cardiff woman has landed herself in jail after she refused to hand over her phone’s PIN during a terrorism investigation. Nermin Onour, just 23, was initially arrested last October on suspicion of encouraging terrorism. As part of the investigation, police requested access to her phone, but Onour repeatedly declined to provide her PIN.

Court proceedings at the Old Bailey on Monday revealed that Onour was made aware that her refusal could result in criminal charges. Despite being issued a Section 49 notice, which legally obligated her to unlock her device, she stood firm in her refusal.

The consequence? An 18-month prison sentence. Detective Chief Inspector Leanne Williams highlighted this case as a cautionary tale, stating it shows how serious the implications can be when individuals fail to comply with legal requests for digital access during such investigations.
While Onour starts her prison time, authorities confirm that the investigation surrounding her initial arrest continues. What do you think of this case? Share your thoughts in the comments.
