An Ethiopian national who arrived in the UK on a small boat and later committed multiple sexual offences is now asking to be deported. Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, living in an asylum seeker hotel, was found guilty following a trial at Chelmsford and Colchester magistrates’ courts. The incidents involved a 14-year-old girl and a woman, both of whom Kebatu assaulted.
During his sentencing hearing, his lawyer revealed that Kebatu has wanted to be deported even before his trial started. Prosecutor Stuart Cowen highlighted Kebatu’s claim that “Epping is in chaos” due to his actions. Disturbingly, he told two teenagers he wanted to “have a baby with each of them” and attempted unwanted advances. His harassment extended to a woman whom he tried to kiss, declaring her “pretty.”
These actions stirred protests in Epping, Essex, and beyond, with communities voicing their outrage about the incidents and broader issues surrounding asylum seekers. The victims, understandably shaken, shared their stress and fear in moving statements. The teenage girl now feels constantly on edge when she’s out, while the woman expressed anger and frustration, noting his apparent ignorance of the wrongness of his actions.
District Judge Christopher Williams declared Kebatu guilty on several charges, including sexual assault and harassment, stating an immediate custodial sentence is expected.
