π΄ββοΈ Attention, cyclists! Important new rules are on the way that you need to know about. The UK government is introducing updated cycling offences as part of the Crime and Policing Bill. ποΈ

These new measures aim to boost street safety and hold cyclists accountable when their actions result in harm. While existing cycling behaviours wonβt be criminalised, penalties will now match those for drivers who cause similar harm. Here’s what’s proposed:

1. **Causing Death by Dangerous Cycling**: Possible life imprisonment.
2. **Causing Serious Injury by Dangerous Cycling**: Up to 5 years in prison, a fine, or both.
3. **Causing Death by Careless Cycling**: Up to 5 years in prison, a fine, or both.
4. **Causing Serious Injury by Careless Cycling**: Up to 2 years in prison, a fine, or both.
Additional existing rules include:
– Fines up to Β£1,000 for careless cycling and Β£2,500 for dangerous cycling.
– Up to 2 years in prison for causing bodily harm under wanton and furious cycling.
– A Β£1,000 fine for cycling under the influence. π»π«
These changes are part of a broader initiative, backed by nearly Β£300 million in funding from the Department for Transport, to improve active travel across England. This investment looks to revitalise high streets, enhance air quality, and support public health and environmental goals. ππͺ
The legislation is currently moving through Parliament, so keep an eye on these developments, as amendments might be made. Stay informed and ride safe! π΄ββοΈβ¨
