Living at home with the parents? You’re not alone! A recent survey of 2,000 Brits reveals some big frustrations for those still residing under their parents’ roof. Top of the list? Loss of independence, with 36% feeling the struggle. Being judged by mum and dad comes close behind, and a third of people are tired of parental interference.

It’s not just about pesky parents, though. Nearly 30% find it tough to maintain relationships, whether romantic or friendly, with their folks around. And while 70% of these adults have never moved out, over half feel like they’ve lost a part of their youth.
In this era of soaring house prices, fewer than 10% can afford to buy their first home in many areas. Londoners, in particular, feel the pinch, with less than 1.5% able to afford a typical property.

Many end up part of the ‘boomerang generation,’ moving back home after initial independence. Some stay longer than planned, and a third even think they’ve outstayed their welcome. Saving for that vital deposit is a slow and frustrating process—often taking longer than expected.
Despite these challenges, many young adults contribute rent while at home, but the dream of independence still feels far off. Nine in ten still hope to fly the nest eventually, yet about 82% acknowledge that saving enough for a deposit remains a distant goal.

The average savings hover around £11,500, but consistent earnings would make many feel better prepared to move out. While living with parents can ease financial burdens, it highlights the tough housing market out there.
The struggle between financial prudence and personal freedom is real, affecting life milestones like independence, marriage, and starting a family. It’s time for change to make home ownership more accessible for young Brits! 🏡✨
