Imagine this: You’re chilling at home, and suddenly, a stranger walks in, nabs your keys, and tosses them over the wall of Cardiff Castle. Sounds like a scene from a heist movie, right? Well, it was reality for one Cardiff resident when Andrew Phillips did just that!

Phillips, caught in the grips of a crack cocaine addiction, found his way into the swanky David Morgan Apartments in the city centre. After sneaking in through a service area, he helped himself to a set of keys, even as the flat’s resident called out from the bedroom. His bold escape plan? A quick exit via the fire escape and a not-so-subtle key launch over the castle wall! 🏯🔑

When confronted by security, Phillips claimed he lived there, adding to the drama. The keys were retrieved from the castle grounds, and Phillips was tracked down a few weeks later. At Cardiff Crown Court, more details emerged, revealing his history of 40 offences and struggles with substance abuse.

Despite being on bail during the incident, the court showed leniency. Thanks to a positive psychiatric report, Judge Daniel Williams decided not to send Phillips straight to jail. Instead, he handed out an 18-month suspended sentence along with rehab activities and mental health treatment.

Leaving the courtroom on crutches, Phillips received good luck wishes from the judge. Here’s hoping he turns things around and finds a more positive path forward! 🍀🤞
