🚗💨 What’s Going on with This Speed Camera? 🤔

In the small village of Pontybodkin, Flintshire, there’s a speed camera grabbing everyone’s attention—and unfortunately, a chunk of their income too! Installed when Wales introduced the 20mph speed limit in September 2023, this camera caught an eyebrow-raising 16% of all 20mph speeding fines in the entire country!

Why is this specific camera nabbing so many drivers? Driving through, you’ll notice it’s at the heart of a stretch of road where the speed limit drops from 30mph to 20mph. Even though it’s marked, some of the signage is obscured by bushes, making it an easy-to-miss warning. Plus, the road doesn’t naturally feel like a slow zone, especially with its long, straight stretch that tempts drivers to exceed the 26mph threshold for fines.
The stats are staggering: in 2024, a whopping 13,442 fines were issued here, contributing heavily to the 85,000 total across Wales. In just the first five months of 2025, 5,000 additional drivers were caught. One unlucky courier even got caught 10 times over a few weeks!
Why all the fuss? The camera itself is rather inconspicuous, blending into its surroundings without the usual road markings. Contrast this with other areas like Sychdyn, where awareness is almost guaranteed due to more prominent warnings.
Should the speed limit here be reconsidered? Some argue that it’s more of a ‘cash cow’ given its high fine rate and lack of accidents. Before the speed limit change, there were only two minor injury collisions, while only one serious crash occurred afterward.
So what do you think? Is this camera a necessary safety measure, or should the limit be re-evaluated? Let us know your thoughts! 🚦🔍 #SpeedCamera #Pontybodkin #WalesDriving
