ππ± **Carmarthenshire’s Climate Commitment: A Path to Net Zero!** π±π

Carmarthenshire’s leaders are standing strong, choosing action over words in the fight against climate change. Despite some sceptics in the political world, the council is steadfast in its mission, aiming to slash carbon emissions by an impressive 80% by 2030!
Already, impressive progress has been made: emissions from heating schools, running council vehicles, and street lighting have dropped by 37% since 2016-17. This achievement comes from embracing energy efficiency, reducing business mileage, and adopting electric vehicles. Plus, a boost of renewable energy into the grid is helping propel this transformation!

With a clear target of reaching net zero by 2030, the council’s strategy includes planting trees and exploring solar projects to offset any remaining emissions. Cllr Aled Vaughan Owen believes this is crucial not only for hitting targets but also for protecting livelihoods and inspiring future generations. βThe real question is, will future generations thank us for our action, or question why we did so little?β he reflects.
Cllr Alun Lenny adds that it’s essential to honour the science and push back against those who refuse to acknowledge climate change. In Carmarthenshire, the plan involves innovative approaches like replacing old boilers with low-emission versions and gradually transitioning more council vehicles to electric.

Though the journey to net zero is estimated to cost around Β£133 million, efficient spending and strategic measures like building sales and fleet upgrades will help manage the budget.
In a broader scope, the agricultural sector in the region, despite being a major emitter, holds great potential for climate mitigation. Nature and biodiversity are also key priorities, with plans afoot to boost tree cover on council lands.
Carmarthenshire is setting the bar for others with its pragmatic and determined plans to create a greener, more sustainable future for all. πΏπ
