A special meeting of the county’s children, young people, and families scrutiny committee is set for October 8th, where they’ll discuss rolling out guidance to all school governing bodies. Each school will still have the autonomy to enforce the new rules and decide on consequences for those who break them, with exceptions made for emergencies and necessity.

The draft plan, already shared with parents and guardians, is likely to take effect from November 3rd. Blaenau Gwent’s Deputy Chief Executive, Dr. Luisa Munro-Morris, emphasised that the initiative is geared towards cultivating a positive atmosphere in schools, ensuring better learning experiences and safeguarding everyone involved.

This potential policy shake-up has roots in growing concerns and evidence from school staff and unions, stressing the negative impact of mobiles on school life. A survey from the NEU highlights this issue, prompting the local authority to consider drastic action.

It’s hoped that by putting this guidance into practice, schools can foster a more focused and safe environment for both students and staff. Let’s see how this plays out in providing a better future for our children! 🏫✨
