Exciting news for South West Wales! The ambitious £400m Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) is set to revolutionise the area with the world’s first integrated train and rail infrastructure testing facility. The competition is now on to find a partner for a major energy and data centre, aiming to attract multi-billion-pound investments. Located on a 700-hectare site at the former Nant Helen opencast mine and Onllwyn Washery in the Dulais Valley, this project promises to inject new life into one of Wales’s most deprived areas.

With interest from over ten parties and a potential for data centres providing hundreds of megawatts, this initiative supports Wales’s growing data centre sector, following the footsteps of ventures like Vantage in Cardiff. The GCRE has already secured a combined £70m from Cardiff Bay and the UK Government, moving closer to its funding target.

GCRE’s innovative vision includes electrified testing tracks, maintenance facilities, a control centre, and even a 100-bedroom hotel. More than 200 companies, including rail giants like Hitachi, are eyeing its cutting-edge facilities.
Chief executive Simon Jones highlights the site’s strategic location and connectivity. Emphasizing sustainable energy, he describes this as a fantastic chance to boost local prosperity through green jobs and modern infrastructure, aligning with Wales’s net zero goals.
Got creative ideas? The competition is open until 21st November, with an energy partner expected by spring. This is a pivotal opportunity to transform South Wales, turning the region into a hub for rail innovation and renewable energy. Now’s the time to harness our natural assets and build a promising economic future. Let’s put Wales on the map as a leader in sustainable development! 🌍🚆💡
