📍 New maps highlight the risks posed by coal tips across Wales, prompting a massive info campaign for 800,000 homes! With recent slips in mind, dedicated teams have been inspecting these sites to ensure their safety. Over 3,000 inspections have taken place, and the data is streamed out biannually to keep communities informed.

🚨 Disused coal tips are graded by risk, from Category R (lowest risk) to Categories C and D, which require regular checks due to potential safety impact. While funding can never fully eliminate these risks, efforts continue to manage them effectively.

🔍 The latest data reveals some shifts: 20 new tips have been identified, three removed, and nine existing tips have changed categories, all predominantly in South Wales. Neath Port Talbot leads the chart with 620 tips, closely followed by Rhondda Cynon Taf and Wrexham.
🏠 To keep people informed, a leaflet is heading out to homes in coalfield regions. It explains ongoing actions to manage tip safety, offering reassurance that sites with increased risks are under vigilant monitoring.
🌿 In a bid to secure safety around these sites, the government has plans for a new public body dedicated to overseeing tip management by 2027. Plus, there’s financial backing, with £118m earmarked by the UK Government to boost coal tip safety.
🌍 Deputy First Minister, Huw Irranca-Davies, reassures, “Increased monitoring signifies our commitment to community safety and addresses coal tip challenges head-on.”
Stay informed and safe, Wales! Together, we can ensure these historic remnants are managed for today’s safety and tomorrow’s peace of mind. 🏞️🔒 #WalesCoalTipSafety #CommunitySafety #WalesNews
