In a recent council meeting in Blaenau Gwent, there was quite the revelation: not everyone is clued up on the rules for installing CCTV cameras at home, including some of our councillors! 🏠

Cllr Lee Parsons highlighted that, while many are keen to boost their home security, there’s limited awareness about when planning consent is needed. He suggested more education on the topic would be beneficial. 📚

The meeting discussed an application by residents Mark and Stephanie Hopkins to set up cameras at Lakeside Close in Nantyglo. Planning officer Sophie Godfrey explained that while CCTV is often allowed under permitted development rights, these cameras were within 10m of another, making permission necessary.

And what about privacy? Sophie assured everyone that the cameras only cover the Hopkins’ property and a small bit of the highway, ensuring neighbours’ privacy isn’t compromised. The application received the green light! 🚦

Cllr Parsons raised a crucial point about the lack of knowledge in handling CCTV applications. With cameras becoming more popular, he urged for guidelines or training. Cllr Wayne Hodgins even suggested creating special planning guidance to better manage these applications. 📑

Joanne White from the development management team clarified that while permitted development rights do exist, whether planning permission is needed depends on the number and proximity of cameras. She proposed sharing info on these rights and data protection regulations to assist everyone involved. ✔️

Stay informed and make sure you’re following the right steps when securing your home. 🏡🔒
